Monastery, Mosque?? Sept 15

Monastery of St. Savior or Kariye Camil Sok

Some of the world's finest Byzantine mosaics are in this former monastery.
The place was built in the 12th century. Again, the 'people pictures' had been covered for centuries because as a mosque they allow no 'other' gods before them. Now they have been restored as well as possible. The tiny tiles used for the pictures are brilliant and really glow with intensity.

They are on one side of the main chapel and tell the story of Mary from her birth to the life of Christ. I think the stories have been embellished by Catholic and/or Orthodox traditions as I've never heard some of them before.

They were still awesome to see.

On another side of the chapel were frescoes that were painted on.

That was a big day and we weren't finished yet....

  2. wow...just wow. The outside of the building is almost as fabulous as the inside but that golden mosaic is just incredible.
