I've got a loverly bunch of mangos

When these trees are in bloom they are not very striking. It looks like they should be loaded with small fruit but eventually they self prune until just a nice cluster of good fruit remains on a branch.

Tuesday, Feb 15 The gift of a mango
Even the green mangos are not that impressive, but they promise luscious fruit to come.

I know I've mentioned the beautiful shade tree which also produces 31 varieties of mangos in this country. They are getting ripe now, and we see them everywhere we go. Some are the big red kind, some are the small yellow 'champagne' mangos which we especially love.

Today we were walking through our neighbourhood on our way to find a restaurant for a good meal. As we walked past a corner lot a youngish man called 'hello' from his hammock. I could see he'd had his fair share of intoxicants today so wasn't sure how friendly I wanted to be. Of course we responded with the standard, hola and beunos tardes. He perked right up and started talking with a bit more english. He asked us if we liked mangos. We said yes and he told us to wait a minute and soon came to his fence with 2 mangos that were obviously from his great shade tree. We thanked him and continued on our way, now carrying a treat which we will enjoy later. I think he wanted us to have something because he appreciated that we were polite enough to stop and chat.

They are available in wheelbarrows on the streets, some are ready to add salt and chili if you like that!
Yesterday they were abou 85cents (cdn) a kilo in Super Che. That's 2.2 lbs worth for well under a dollar!

  5. PS - LOVE how they've prepped the mango-on-a-stick ... they are not my favourite fruit to deal with and that looks fun and easy-access.
