Memories of The Week that Went

What a good first week. We have had so many enjoyable experiences. One of the really nice things about being in Mexico is their politeness. I know it's part of the old Spanish formality but simple things like being greeted (Good Morning) as you pass a stranger on the street is very pleasant.

This morning our local school had a visitation from some local military dept. We could hear the coronet and drums doing their thing... (mostly with more enthusiasm than accuracy)!! The military people we saw were dressed in fatigues.

A tradition I want to remember. Like our kids, Santa comes on Christmas eve - and only leaves them one present. The great celebration is on January 6 when the children are visited by the 3 Magi. The night before, as they go to bed, they write a list of things they want the magi to bring them! This list is left in their shoe. Now all the parents have to race to the markets and stores and find these treasure so that the next morning they will be under their tree, waiting for them! What a frenzy that must be. That makes Jan 6 a major holiday.

It helps, I suppose, that the expectations are probably not that high, but I have seen many young kids carrying a cell phone. The electronic age has certainly hit even the very southern reaches of Mexico.

  1. Is that a tropical Christmas moose pinata? How fun! I believe that life should be lived 'with more enthusiasm than accuracy' - play on, band, play on! :)

  2. Yep, the band got more smiles from us than a symphony would have!!

And yes, it was a moose Christmas balloon, I couldn't resist!
