Serendipity, and Solidarity

Jim and I decided we could do a good morning walk today.

The breeze is up and it seemed a tiny bit cooler. So it's back 'uptown' and beyond. We checked out a couple of places that look like possibilities for a church service tomorrow. One is a Baptist church but everything looks very Spanish, the other is a great new building that looks like it's used for various assemblies.

We made our way back to the tourist area of town, had our cappucino treat, made arrangements for a tour next Tuesday, bought some medicine for Jim's cough, checked out some clothes but didn't buy, talked to our friend Gina, the local tourist guru and guide. While we were standing at her booth she pointed out that a parade had started.

Indeed, at least 100 people, mostly dressed in white and carrying slogans, flags, banners, walked somberly and proudly down the street. There signs said things like 'down with kidnapping', 'no more violence', ... peace.... justice, etc.

Right behind this mass of people were at least 150 taxis, 2 abreast and quietly following the walkers.

Behind the taxis were another 100 or more big trucks, all from one main construction company.

Many taxis and trucks also had banners of solidarity. No horns blared, no engines revved.

From what we could find out, the parade may have been in support of a taxi driver who was kidnapped last week. Also, an off duty police man was killed recently and he may have been included in the sentiment.

I found the whole procession very moving and impressive. It was all done so respectfully and yet I think their feelings must have been honest and deep to put on such a major display.
