Sun Jan 30
Yet again we walked the local beach. We were doing two beaches so I opted to walk a bit of the commercial area before heading down to sand and sun. Many of the shops were closed, restaurants were open and a few tourist junk places too. It was very quiet.
We cut down to the beach at the end of Principal Beach. What a site greeted us there. Hundreds of Mexicans with their families all enjoying the sand and surf.
The local Catholic church has 'the' idol of a saint and this is the day that many make a pilgrimage to see her - and then they get to enjoy the beach! There were large buses parked everywhere, obviously this is a big deal.
We carried on eastward to Marinero beach and again, the waves were gorgeous and inviting. Our intention was to find more books to read at the local exchange 'bar' so we plodded on.
Finally, off the heavy hot sand and onto a sweet little boardwalk. I'm not sure why exactly, but halfway up the boardwalk I fell forward and gave myself a good whack! Not too much damage but it was quite a shock. I don't know if I was dehydrated, distracted, or just dim.
Anyway, I pulled myself together and we walked over to a super coffee and pastry shop and I was soon comforted!! Time for another iced capaccino and some lunch. The place was full and in just listening your could hear languages from Europe, Quebec, U.S. and South America. Very cosmopolitan. I noticed the young people in the shop mostly ordered pancakes and eggs - I'm sure they'll spend hours surfing so they probably wanted the carbs.
We found the book shop and selected a couple of books each then walked the commercial street back to our 'casa'.
A quiet afternoon to catch up on inside stuff - priority being another shower.
The sunset was looking like it would be fabulous so we trotted off down the road about 3 blocks west where we thought we'd get a superb open view. Great cloud formation which usually means spectacular colour but not this night. We watched it anyway as did another family. We began to stiltingly chat with them, and their sweet little 5 year old daughter. They too had come to town from up in the mountain and had spent the afternoon at Manzanillo beach (just below where we were standing). They were very friendly and their little girl chatted with us and showed us the tiny shells she had collected - she could count to ten in English! I could count to ten in Spanish so we had fun!!
the locals seem to really like the beaches too! good thing it is not all tourists...
