6 a.m. Sat. morning we pulled away from our mooring buoy in Levitha Bay and set out to the seas again. The gales had quieted to a light breeze, the seas were small and choppy so we prepared for a good sail.
We weren't sure if we would go to Naxos or Amorgos. Not far along the voyage I went below to do a little errand. Bad move. I got seasick and by the time I went above again I could barely manage to keep my tummy under control. It was a miserable 5 hours for me but eventually I settled and we decided Amorgos was far enough so we pulled in at the docks provided in the town of Katapola.
Again we stern tied to the dock. Within a few hours we had a massive yacht sitting beside us. It is a Greek boat but has a Denmark courtesy flag flying too. Maybe they are movie stars!! It certainly dwarfed our 42.5 ft sailboat.
The regular ferry line docks very close to us and it seemed hundreds of backpackers landed just after us. Of course many were leaving too so I guess we're balanced out. This island has great walking trails and is 30 k long and less than 1 k wide.
The water front is similar to most other towns. There are little grocery markets, souvenir stores, outdoor cafes, car and scooter rentals and small hotels. We made our way to The Corner Taverna and had a nice little birthday lunch (for Pat).
We walked the length of the town. At the far end we chatted with an interesting man. It turned out that he and his wife are from Los Angeles and have lived here for 10 years. When he met his 2nd wife in L.A. she said she'd marry him if she could have kids and if they could live in a little Greek island called Amorgos. She runs a lovely clothing shop and he works for an architect who is building grand homes. They both seem really busy in the summer, winter will be very quiet. He speaks some Greek but he was brought up Mexico so he is fluent in Spanish and English. They have a son and daughter who are fluent in English and Greek and are very happy they have made this island their home.
In the cooler evening we again walked back to the far end of town. This time to get me a birthday dessert. We chose crème brulee and were not dissappointed.

ReplyDeleteI showed Tash the picture of the boats and tried to expalin how big that yacht must have been to make your sailboat look like that. She said your boat looked like the dinghy alongside.:)
Sorry to hear you had a rough time on the water mom - that's pretty gross for 5 hours!
I was so enjoying that picture of you lounging deckside, mom, until it occurred to me that you might have just been trying to settle things. I never would have imagined you'd get sea sick!
ReplyDeleteSo fun to see your next posting. Also sorry you got sick. Somehow didn't think that happened. ha. Glad you did acknowledge your birthday. Hmmm. Creme brulee. Sounds yummy. Syl
