On Sunday we took a ferry ride. It took us to Delos and then on to Mykonos. The trip itself was remarkable. The ferry was fast, the seas were somewhat rough, and about 50% of the people who were in our area were very sick. We had each taken a half a gravol so we weathered the trip well. Young and old and many inbetween were pitifully sick.
Delos is known as the sacred island because of its history. As soon as we got off the ferry we could see fields and hills of ancient broken down buildings and statuary. There were leftover temples/houses to many of the Greek gods. Apparently, at one time, there were 30,000 people living there.
Up on the hillside there was a new building which had a cafe and museum in it. We were all astounded at the wonderful pieces of statuary and pottery, etc. that they had found on site and were now housed in this very large building. Many pieces were from the 6th and 7th century B.C.
We rushed through most of the place because of time constraints. We had 3 hours there and wished we had 3 days.
We were, again, out in the midday sun but managed with hats and clothes that covered most bare spots.
the history is almost overwhelming...
