Monday morning we thought it would be a good plan to take a short walk to the beaches east of our place. We were early enough that we could watch some of the fishermen come in with their catches. Jim had walked down to this first beach on Sunday and he was amazed to see 12 black marlin on the beach. He said they were about 6 feet long. There are ladies at wooden tables who do the cleaning and preparing them for market.
So again we look for some fish. This morning it is lovely red snapper? cod? not sure but they looked fine for eating.
We wandered farther down the beach, reaching Marinara Beach and we planned to sit under an umbrella and enjoy the surf. We were both struck with the urgency of diarrhea and fortunately sighted the word 'banos' on a far wall. I must say they turned out to be as rustic as we have seen down here but we were thankful for them!!! Each room had a toilet - no tank, no sink, none of the amenities we so dearly love.
If you can see in the photo, that large box sitting out on the corner of the deck holds water. You pick up a bucket, fill it with this water, and pour it down the toilet... that is the flushing system!!
We decided we'd better head back for the comforts of home and that is where we spent the rest of our day. We relaxed on our deck, always charmed by the graceful frigate birds who float so effortlessly in the ocean upcurrents.
Tues. Our larder is looking quite bare - or at least unappealing. We chose to go down to our hotel dining room and have coffee and pancakes. They were so very good and the coffee was real!
We feel now we can challenge ourselves with a hike up the hill to the SuperChe and stock up our kitchen again.
We hadn't gone more than a block when we notice something on the street. At first I was repelled at what looked like a huge (make that gargantuan) hairy rat dead on the street. Once Jim did a double look he realized it was an opossum. It was well over 2 feet long so I'm glad it wasn't a rat - but the features are not that different!! That was one of the rare mornings I didn't take my camera so we have no picture. I know we're all sorry.
Later in the afternoon we walked westward to Puerto Angelito beach. We'd never spent any time there as it is often crowded with boats. We were amazed to find it is a very busy beach with lots of restaurants and markets and it seems particularly enjoyed by Mexicans.
Again we so enjoyed watching the kids play so happily in the water and with each other. I am also impressed that it is usually the dad who is in the water with his kids, just having fun.
I got in the water long enough to cool down and it was so nice.
We could see Puerto Escondido eastern beaches from this viewpoint.
A good day and a quiet evening.

That looks like some tasty red snapper I guess it wouldn't last the trip back though eh? Pancakes too that is a score.
ReplyDeleteOur Daughter Carolyn and son in law Dale should be sailing by you today. We put them on a cruise ship at San Pedro yesterday. There are going through the Panama. We aare still here in Sky Valley enjoying the warm weather.
ReplyDeleteLooks like some good fish. I'm not sure I'd trust the structure of that bathroom, let alone the cleanliness factor; but I know...when ya gotta go, ya gotta go.
