Dear Shirley

No one should consider going to Greece before seeing Shirley Valentine. The movie is okay but a one woman performance in Chemainus was superb. We had seen this one woman production years ago and were delighted with another brilliant performance. Nicola Cavendish has performed 'Shirley' for the last 20 years. She suggested that this would be her last time so we were especially glad to have been there.

Shirley Valentine (if you haven't met her), is a dull middle aged British housewife who dutifully makes sausage and fries each Wednesday, fries and eggs on Thursday, etc .... to an ungrateful and equally dull husband.
Something of her youth comes to the fore and she realizes that if she doesn't give herself this opportunity to go to Greece for a couple of weeks she will have truly given up on life.
Of course she meets Mr. You're Fun For Now. She falls for the beauty of the sights and sounds of Greece and joy comes to her soul.
Nicola Cavendish performed it with such sensitivity and humour, we left knowing that life can be wonderful - at any age.
Added to the finale we walked out to the lobby and found they had Greek snacks available for all. We had tzaziki, hummous, spanikopita, dolmades, calamari, AND, (heaven help me) the best baklavas we have ever eaten!!!

  1. Thank you for including us in on your blog. We will be following you all the way. I am sure this is going to be an experience of a life time. You two lucky bums. Take lots of pictures and hopefully you will let us see them when you get back home. Just got back from a week spent with family in Quesnel and Sorrento. We stayed with great people

Love to you two, Elmer & Sylvia.

  2. hi guys, I just read all your blogs and reread Greece. You write so interestingly, Pat. It sounds like the winds are holding you in place a bit. Hope you'll be free soon. Your "cheap" gyro dinner sounded fun and delicious. Still wish I was there. Berne

  3. Hi Guys, got your postcard from Kos today, thanks so much, a great one for the collection. Sounds like you are having great experiences, lots of history and sight to take in. Its very interesting to get the almost daily bulletins. I'm sure its no hotter there than here, its been 40C on our deck most days for almost two weeks, hardly even a breeze to cool things off at night. I'm ready to emigrate to Iceland or thereabouts. Love from Gene and Vic
