The island of Kos is one of the most easterly islands in the Aegean Sea. From our marina we can see the hills of Turkey about 3 nautical miles across the bay.
Kos' fame comes from being the birthday place of Hippocrates (father of modern medicine). It also has fame as the land of cos (romaine) lettuce.
Day 1 was spent in provisioning the boat, getting acquainted with the 42 ft Moody Yacht, having a nap, exploring a bit, and relaxing.
We shower at the marina each morning and 15 minutes later wonder if it's time to shower again. Fortunately there is a good breeze of the sea so we do get some relief from the intense heat of the sun.
We are charmed by the waterfront and the easy going lifestyle here. Howard and Polly (owners of 'Cariad') suggested a local restaurant for supper which was a quick 2 blocks away. On our walk to the cafe we were greeted by the glorious aroma of jasmine and plumaria, and enjoyed looking at a variety of flowering shrubs. Marg and I ordered moussaka and we thought it was fabulous.
Day 2 Howard and Polly arrived at “Cariad” at 10:30am so that we could go out for a trial sail. It was great to be on the blue sea and get a feel for this vessel. We put up the jib and main sail and had a nice little run. We anchored in a bay, just for practice. I was so tempted to jump overboard and swim in the very inviting water.
We came back to the marina and, after listening to weather reports decided to wait a couple of days before heading to our next destination. The winds are blowing up quite strong in the afternoon and the next two days the seas will be heavy so it's advisable to stay put.
History in this country is so amazing. ie. Hippocrates was born here in 377BC. Ptolemy II of Egypt was born here. This place sent 30 ships to the Trojan War.
We are in Kos town, the capital and main port. There is an abundance of palms, pines, oleander and hibiscus. Hellenistic and Roman ruins are within walking distance of where we're docked.
We walk many miles in a day. Around each corner is a little spot of charm. We try to walk in the shade but don't let the midday sun keep us inside.
