A Day in Athens
We arrived in Athens in the dark of night. First we inquired about a room at the airport hotel and for a mere 365 Euros we could have a room (that's about $500. a night). We declined.
Back at the airport a travel agent phoned several hotels and finally found one that had a room available. Not only that, but he came tot he airport to pick us up in his car.
It was a charming 18 room place. It reminded me of a good small hotel in Mexico – because of the marble stairway, tile floors throughout and plaster walls.
We crashed quickly and woke a few hours later to birds chirping and doves cooing.
I opened the shutters and beheld a neighbouring building with roses and geraniums on their deck. What a happy site.
A full breakfast was delivered with very strong coffee. Then we were fit to face Athens and it's summer heat.

Athens itself does not leave a good impression until you experience the city core. The sidewalks are uneven and many need repair. There seems to be as many motor scooters as vehicles and the roadways are very busy.
Our destination, by city bus, was the very new Acropolis Museum. It was an amazing sight. Artifacts back to 500-600 BC. Beautiful pottery shapes with extremely fine line drawings. Magnificent, larger than life statues of many mythical people and animals.
It seems to be true that if you dig in Greece, you are likely to come upon some historical artifact. In fact, the Museum is built on an townsite with roads and buildings and bath houses. You can view all this from outside and/or see it in some of the areas that have glass floors.
That was all we had time for, besides some local food and drinks. My first REAL Greek salad. Yum.

Late in the afternoon we went back to airport and met Marg and Dave and then wait for our flight to the Island of Kos where the boat is waiting for us. (yes, boats do wait). The Agean airplane was delayed but we finally arrived at Kos at 2 a.m. We were greeted by Howard and Polly (the boat owners), shown through the sailboat and then we jumped into our beds.
Ah, sweet rest.

  2. Oh, I'm so glad you had a day to check out a little of Athens! Hope there's lots of spots for you to connect and update!

Cowboy & I had Greek for lunch in Ladysmith today - real Greek family run place - and thought of you! I told the daughter, our server, about your trip and she said "one day in Athens is enough - Greece is in the islands." :)
