Ieraka

Ieraka Aug 10.

We awoke early and got underway because Dave realized that an electrolyte activity was happening on the metal under parts of our boat. None of us had experienced it before but a noise like crackling raindrops – which got progressively louder all night.

Dave said we'd reanchor out a bit and then decided that the seas would be calm so kept going. That meant I didn't have time to brush my teeth, get out of my pjs, wash my face or comb my hair.

The seas got rough enough that I didn't want to down below so I sat in the cockpit for 7 hours as we made our way to Ieraka.

It was a good sail but rather choppy as we had following seas and larger seas meeting us as we get closer to the real Mediterranean.

It was good to get to a small village port again. We soon jumped into the waters at the end of the pier and had a refreshing swim. Then we shower the salt water off at the back of our boat and get on with our day.

Actually, it was in mid afternoon so we waited until 5 pm before we went exploring. Jim and I walked through the village, past a lagoon that had lots of little fish in it, and finally settled into a little cafe for our frappe reward. A bottle of water is supplied (but a small charge is paid) and then, as we enjoyed a really good frappe, (you never know) he brought us a slice of chocolate cake (gratis). We do love the Greek generosity.

After that we thought we'd have the energy to climb a hill and search for the ruins of the acropolyse of Zarax – whoever he was. We did get there and could look out onto the sea again. There was not much about the ruin to help know what it was like originally.

During our walk back we met Marg and Dave and we returned to town together. We stopped at a little roadside cafe for our evening meal.Jim ordered squid, it was good but very plain.

By 10 pm we were all in bed and had a better sleep than the previous night. True is, M & D never have a really good night's sleep, they hear everything and have to check
it out. We sleep like happy babies.
