Katapolo August 21/09
We sailed away from Kyparissia by 8 a.m. and, after 6 hours of mostly sailing we arrived at Katapolo. We stern tied to the dock again. This time it will cost us 15 euros a night. So many times we have not been charged at all. Even when Dave has been requested to go to the port authorities and if we are only staying one night they just tell him everything is fine, no worry. We have decided they don't want to bother with the paperwork. Maybe, again, they are just being generous.
We have loved the sights along the shoreline as we sailed up. So much vegetation, orchards, greenhouses, (who knows why in this heat!) smallish beach resorts and houses sprinkled along the way. It always reminds us of the Okanagan. I guess we didn't realize how very barren most of those rocky islands were. In fact, the mainland is still very rocky and mountainous so the Greeks must find it necessary to utilize any dirt they can find.
We arrived at Katapolo and saw 2 cruise ships in the harbour but they left before we tied in. Thank goodness, that would have been a huge crowd of people to contend with in this small port village.
Again, we enjoyed meeting our yachtie neighbours, walking through the town, and enjoying our frappes at a restaurant near our boat.
We just confirmed our flight to Turkey on September 13 for our 12 day tour there. It's hard to imagine we'll enjoy it just as much as Greece. We won't compare, we'll just appreciate the differences.
Tomorrow we catch a morning train and take a short trip to the real Olympia. More later.
your pictures are starting to look like the area you are in is getting some of the smoke from the fires around Athens...or is it just hazy? You are starting to sounds like maybe by the time you're done the sailing portion you'll be ready to move onto something else, or maybe you're just trying not to sound redundant for us? Anyway, I hope it's all still great. We've enjoyed the posting and the post cards.

Everyday seems to offer us something new and so enjoyable, we really wish it could go on for another month for sure.
ReplyDeleteWe always seem to have some haze, we weren't even aware of fires around Athens. Will be back there by Sept 10.
Love to all, mom
