Kyparissia August 20/09
So now we've sailed north as far as Kyparissia. We were able to get the wind off our nose to have a lovely sail for several hours.
After arriving here, at a very new marina, we rested for a while. Finally we got up the energy to walk around some of the town/city. It is a great place but, like most of our stops, not much information readily available for visitors.
We did find an internet cafe, a park and beach that was well used by vacationers and locals. We walked along the beach too and I found lovely smooth stones. My self imposed rule is to only take one from each beach.
I was delighted to find that the boat tied up behind us belongs to people from Dublin, Ireland. He was listening to some beautiful Irish music as Marg and I passed his boat so I told him that I loved his music. He said that he hoped it didn't bother us, and I replied that it was wonderful to hear. His sailboat is white with green trim – how Irish can you get!
The boat in front of us had a lone sailor in it. The sailboat was only 2 years old and he was taking it to Turkey to leave in a port there. I think it will be used as a cruiser for those who rent by the week or month. He was British, his wife doesn't sail and his daughters had just spent two weeks with him in the Ionian Sea.
We did a first for our evening meal. Along with the standard Greek salad, we ordered a plate of fried fish. They are finger size sardine, head off, and deep fried. You just chomp down the whole thing, holding onto the tail. They were quite good.
The sad thing is that what once was their cheapest food on a menu (fish), is now the most expensive, by far. It is generally sold by the Kg or 2Kg so that much would do several people – but – it would cost you $100. (around 50 to 70 euros). They even farm fish here now but that doesn't seem to make it any cheaper.
Late in the evening we enjoyed a musical concert that was playing across the harbour from us. A nice mix of traditional, eastern, and concert music.
It was early to bed so we could be off in the a.m. Again we slept like babies. Dave can't figure out how we do it!
