Kefallinia Island

Kefallinia Island Aug 26

We sailed north today, along the east coast of Zakinthos. We had hoped to stop at the 'blue caves' but again there were so many tour boats in the waters we didn't feel safe to anchor and then dinghy through the cave areas. It is very busy right now with tourists, local and foreign.

Jim saw a seal as we travelled. Apparently they are very rare so we were happy for HIM.

So we sailed north and reached Katelios Bay on the southern end of Kefallinia Island. It is the largest of the Ionian Islands and has lots to offer.

We anchored off a bay that also has a beach for loggerhead turtles to lay their eggs in.

Dave was first in the water again to check the anchor and then he swam to the beach to investigate. It's shocking to us that there are so few interesting fish anywhere we swim. I know they are being fished out at a great rate.

Marg soon followed him in and they headed for shore again. By the time I got my act together they were well on their way back to Cariad so I just snorkeled around the boat a bit and enjoyed being in the water. I didn't see a single fish, or any form of sealife. It's hard to complain though, the water is crystal clear and beautifully turquoise against the white sands below.

Another beautiful day in Greece, and we're seeing more sunset afterglows, probably from fires around Athens.

  1. No turtles at all. Well Dave saw one and before we could look 4 or 6 tour boats had surrounded it and we were pushed out. We didn't want to be part of that kind of treatment to turtles and never did see them along the way.
