Sami, Kefallinia Is. Aug 27.
Our night was a little restless as we were open to the sea and felt soft swells most of the night.
We were on our way north again by 8:30 and sailed a bit before the winds died. So we motored as far as Sami, a sweet little port town about halfway up the island. The hills are lush with trees and small hotels and houses are built to view the waters.
We are seeing more boats in these waters as we get closer to larger centers. It's still a very relaxed way to travel.
After docking and making Greek salad for lunch (yes, we still love it), Jim and I wandered into the town to get information on places to see here. At the tourist center we met a man with very good English. It turns out that he was born here but at 2 years his parents moved to Australia and then when he was 20 or so he moved to Montreal. He worked for Canadian Pacific Airlines as a steward for 23 years but quit after it was taken over by Air Canada. He has the same 'not good' opinion of them that we do. He has a family home here so he has moved back. He lives high on the mountainside and his view of the bay and sea must be gorgeous.
We had a wonderful conversation with him about the Greek language and Greek lifestyle. He says that even Latin is based on the Greek language. He also says that Greeks know how to live and government does not expect to 'rule' them – because, they are the government – and isn't that what democracy really is? It was fun to get his input.
Wow, the fun just keeps on happening. At this time we are sitting in a restaurant on the waterfront and enjoying 3 musicians. One is on an acoustic guitar, one on a bouzouki and one has a hand drum. The Greek music is so enjoyable, it makes a perfect evening.
I threw in the photo of the awning because it reminded me that 'Captain Carelli's Mandolin' was filmed here! On this lovely verdant island. Right where we are tonight!!!!!
